CONNECTING OPPORTUNITIES FOR INNOVATION

Bassano Workshop

Bassano Workshop: Human Centric Lighting – The influence of light on humans

Over 120 people attended a one-day workshop, in the “J. da Ponte” High school in December 2015. The workshop focused on the potential of Human Centric Lighting as a tool to make the lighting environment in schools more stimulating and harmonious.

The workshop addressed different types of stakeholders:

  1. Students and teachers, from local schools. These included high schools, technical and vocational schools.
  2. Councilors and municipal officers
  3. Professionals such as architects, engineers and lighting designers
  4. People from the Luce in Veneto lighting cluster and its companies
  5. AIDI Italian Illumination Association –  Triveneto area

The main objective of the workshop was to make the participants interested in the human significance of light. I.e. to improve the knowledge about the Human Centric dimension of lighting. In particular, how HCL lighting could be used in schools.

The morning sessions were aligned with the themes pursued by the International Year of Light 2015. These included: “Science of Light”, “Technology of Light”, “Light in Nature”, “Light and Culture”.

In the afternoon the workshop became a laboratory where students had the opportunity to better understand the many applications of Led technologies. These labs began a cooperative path between students, teachers and the lighting companies and experts. The practical application of the knowledge gained during the workshop developed into a series of small projects.

The potential impact of the workshop is notable thanks to the very positive commitment expressed by all the schools involved. Students might act also as bridge between their parents and school and municipality, to further trigger the discussion on HCL lighting and intelligent SSL lighting in the territory.

A further outcome of the workshop is that the Municipality of Bassano is planning to organize a building course on lighting design and lighting application. This will be aimed at professionals in the building sector such as architects, engineers, and technicians etc.

The initial idea is to organize a course of at least 16 hours in cooperation with the INBAR National Institute of Bio-Architecture.

To ensure wide interest and participation, the Municipality will try to obtain patronage of several professional associations and to achieve professional credits for the SSLerate course.

M’illumino di meno

All these Bassano projects and workshops culminated in the national energy event “M’illumino di meno” (I will use less light). There were three important events:

Students at the Enrico Fermi Institute developed an innovative classroom lighting system based on these principles of adapting light to the needs of the students and teachers. They were also supported by lighting companies and experts. After analysis of the existing lighting, the students developed a lighting management system specifically for the needs of classrooms.

The ENAIP vocational training institute developed a way of demonstrating different techniques for visual merchandising for retail applications. Techniques such as accent lighting, dynamic lighting etc were presented and tested by students.

Lastly, there was a theatrical presentation of the Divine Comedy of Dante using LED technologies.
